Bioremediation is a process utilizing natural elements to stabilize, clean, or decontaminate an environment that has been exposed to harmful influences.

Composting is the most common example of bioremediation, and is an easy way for anyone to reclaim vegetation and enrich the soil for future growth.

Desalination of agricultural land through use of deliberate planting is the oldest example of this process. Coastal areas and riverbanks have long been stabilized and converted to fertile growing acreage by use of sedges and reeds.

More recently, the use of microbes has proven effective in industrial applications, such as cleaning up oil spills, decontaminating nuclear leach fields, and the elimination of heavy metals from groundwater.
